A collection of German fairy tales first published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the famous Brothers Grimm. Their most famous tales are instantly recognizeable "Rumpelstiltskin", "Snow White", "Rapunzel", "Cinderella", "Hansel and Gretel", and "The Frog Prince." The collection is often known today as "Grimms' Fairy Tales".

Household Tales (Audible Audio Edition) The Brothers Grimm Kelly Lintz Audible Studios Books

This is an ebook edition of Margaret Hunt's 1884 translation of the *complete* Brother's Grimm (i.e., the 211-tale "large edition," intended for adults and scholars). As such, the language is slightly archaic, and the text itself is lengthy, with the tradeoff that this version does contain the entire collection of stories in the forms the Grimms gave them. Thus, expect the language to be slightly different from what you might remember reading before ("Little Red Riding Hood" is here "Little Red-Cap") and the stories may contain more crudity, violence, and (occasionally) anti-semitism than the versions most people are familiar with. Similarly, several stories normally expurgated from later editions (i.e., "The Jew Among Thorns") are present in this collection.

There's no indexed table of contents, so you'll have to use the kindle's "find" feature to jump to specific stories, and there are some typographical/transcription errors, etc.. It also doesn't appear to contain the Grimm's or Hunt's scholarly footnotes. Still, this is a great overall grab for a free kindle ebook, and probably perfect for lunch-break reading and the like.

A little context: The Brothers Grimm were the first to make a significant scholarly attempt to collect the "original" versions of traditional folk tales, as told by ordinary people. They didn't always adhere perfectly to that dictum -- some of the stories they collected from print sources and educated, middle-class tale-tellers, not just the "common folk" -- but they were in many ways the first scholarly folklorists. They were also German nationalists, and their collections were intended to help foster a sense of German national identity and "German virtues."

Because the Grimms did edit their stories somewhat, and because many of these are traditional stories that exist in many versions in many nations, there are often versions that are "earlier" and more primal than the ones here. If you find yourself wanting more, I'd recommend you look up works by Charles Perrault or Andrew Lang; Perrault's tales pre-date the Grimms' and are often more violent (i.e., Red Riding Hood gets eaten); Andrew Lang's post-date the Grimms and are intended for children, but both should be out of copyright and available in free online editions.

Household Tales (Audible Audio Edition) The Brothers Grimm Kelly Lintz Audible Studios Books Reviews

I was kind of disappointed on the kindle version of the ebook... navigation of the Table of Contents are non existent. There is a Table of Contents but no links to go directly to the story.
Beautiful book with pages guilded in gold. The fairy tales are very good and its the type of book you add to your permanent book collection and/or give as a gift. Definitely worth the money
I have been a fan of the Brothers Grimm for 70 years, as long as I could read. I think this is the fourth copy I have owned. The themes of mystery and romance are mixed with images of adventure and meditation. The exciting exploration of life through this lines is a valuable tool for learning personal guidance.
This was a gift - but my daughter is reading it and really enjoys it. It is true to that the stories are so different then the ones that we grew up with. She did not comment on the violence, sexual content, or the story narration. She just commented on how she really loves the book. She is 23yrs old.
There is another Grimm collection that has for free and that one has a lot of punctuation problems and shortened versions of their tales (like Cinderella leaves off the ending) This one seems to have all the really well know tales and also many of the not so well known and the fables that have heavy Christian Religious tones to them as well. I don't recommend it for younger children if you are the type of parent that wants to filter all the dark parts of these stories out. Grimm versions tend to have a much more gruesome end for some characters.
Beautifully illustrated, bound and crafted, these classic tales make a great gift for someone who loves a good book.
My 11 year old daughter is a avid gifted reader and enjoys classic literature. It was one of her summer goals to finish this on her , along with other reads. She just finished. She did mention that none of the tales ended as modern tales say. She was intrigued by the original endings although somewhat violent. She mentioned older English for language and said it seemed like the longest book she ever read thus far but it was hard to tell as the kindle version lacked page numbers to track. It could have been the harder reading because of the older English. I think she mainly read it so she could say she had. And it was a free download.
