I agree with some of the other reviewers - a very 'clever' novel. I do not think that this novel will be valued by all and sundry - so take note, it is not a beach read. It is a well planned novel and I take my hat off to the author. I bought this book after reading the author's other novel - The Death of Rafael - and will continue to look for novels by her. I felt a bit confused at the beginning of the book, so if you feel like that when you start reading, please persist, it is excellent. I went back and reread the first 15% when I've reached the 25% mark and I am glad I did. I am also thinking about rereading the whole novel as I am almost sure that there are things that I might have missed. I'll say it again - it is an excellent novel!Product details

The Wolves of Pavlava Adriana Renescu 9781439264720 Books Reviews
Finally a novel about Romania without vampires! The author knows this country, and its people, very well, and manages to perfectly capture the complex spirit of the place. Between fear and rebellion, religion and sensuality, she manages to create a growing suspense around her vivid and multidimensional characters as the story unfolds parallel to great historical changes in the late 20th century. Irony in the right places, together with a sapiently created sense of authenticity make this book a fascinating read, which will leave behind the haunting feeling that many of the things described in it could actually have happened. I hope Adriana Renescu makes true on her promise of more novels soon!
A well written and exciting novel placed in a remote setting that the author obviously knows well.
This is an author to watch!
Clever, it's how I would describe Adriana's plot, writing, and characterizations. The Wolves are indeed howling in this book, adding a mysterious and almost otherworldly feel to the plot to have a Romanian Nun made into a Catholic Saint. Who would expect the intrigue, the harsh realities of politics to be found in this excellent novel.
The imagery is excellent as we are taken from the grand expansive halls of the Vatican in Rome to the wilds of Romania, and then deep into its heart in Bucharest. The trials of all involved are intertwined exceptionally well, all characters have their place and purpose, weaved into the story in such a way that without any of them, something would have been missing.
The plot is twisted, unexpected and unnerving at times. The characters very real, wonderfully animated. My favorite of course was Invernam, and a perfect foil against Corbu, making both masterminds quite exceptional when thrown together. One only wonders what might have happened had things been different in the end.
All in all, the book is mesmerizing, well laid out, pulling you ever deeper into the sordid story of politics, the church and more that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Adriana is an exceptional author, and knowing her, I expect great things to come from her pen.
I love the mystery of this story and the characters in it. It is absolutely one of the best stories I have read in a long time.....could even see it being made into a movie!
The Wolves of Pavlava is an intelligent read, packed with meaty substance. From Romania to Rome, from the mysticism of would-be saints to the ruthless depravity of Communist dictators, from cathedrals and palaces to bleak monasteries and cold winter forests, the author takes us for quite a ride. Politics and secrets loom large while two fascinating main characters duel for attention, yet each secondary character also stands clearly etched. I learned a lot about Romania's history and the politics of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, but the details are deftly woven and the author does not lecture, though she obviously knows her subject matter well.
An intricate plot woven with compelling characters and beautifully wrought descriptions hooks the reader firmly, and that hook only sinks deeper the further you get in the story. This master storyteller holds us in the palm of her hand from the first page right through to the satisfying ending.
Adriana Renescu is definitely an author to watch. Two thumbs up!
Set in Romania during the communist regime, this appealed for novelty value; I knew nothing about the area. An interesting and well put together mystery, featuring the catholic and orthodox churches, communist army and revolutionaries.
The author plunges you into a physical environment and atmosphere that allows you to vividly imagine the scene. The author values your intelligence and often suggests rather than tells you what has occurred or may occur. However, you know what her two protagonists say and do as well as what they think. Since the novel largely takes place in a police state where everything indoors is bugged and you cannot trust your "trusted" employees, knowing what the two principals are thinking while acting and speaking is essential. They are fascinating characters, sometimes profane, sometimes humorous, survivors who are willing to play at the highest level of politics. I couldn't put it down once the players were introduced and the action got rolling.
